Eco inspiration :: Katie Gannon

Quality fabrics and exquisite attention to detail, mixed in with a splash of vintage: these are the qualities that herald a Mother Maria garment to any discerning (eco) fashionista.

Katie Gannon established the Mother Maria label in 2004, after demand for her one-off, vintage inspired creations blossomed. Incorporating a mix of vintage fabrics with new silks, cottons and organic jerseys ensures that each Mother Maria garment is unique. Furthermore, being completely designed and manufactured in Australia means that Mother Maria fashion ticks all the eco boxes.

To celebrate the arrival of Mother Maria's Winter 2010 range (titled Parisienne) instore, we interviewed Katie Gannon about creating eco-fashion in Australia and how she celebrates being green in other aspects of her life:

Sum up your label in 25 words
"Girly, pretty, simple, clean. For the lady with the independent spirit, the good heart, and the imagination to create her own image."

Is the animal (fur) out of the closet?

Cindy Crawford in fur on the cover of Russian Vogue

This morning, whilst waiting for my boss to open the office, I indulged in one of my favourite pass times - vintage window shopping. I say window shopping because if I enter this particular op shop, I know I will leave a good deal of money there. As it is, there is an adorable pair of 50s style heels with a matching handbag that are singing a siren song to my purse. I really need to start leaving my cash at home (and freezing my credit card in a bucket of water, but that's another story).

Anyhoo, on this particular morning, as I was admiring said shoes and bag, something else caught my eye - a vintage fur jacket and matching hat. I was instantly confronted - fur?! I went through the usual 'is it real? No, it can't be - hang on - no! But yes, I think it is! Can it be?' And so then came the question: Is fur accepatable because it's vintage?
